Dido and Aeneas – Choirs Concert

As well as the usual performances from the Chapel and Chamber choirs and the Musical Theatre Group, this concert also includes a semi-staged performance of one of the greatest English operas, Dido and Aeneas. This prolific work received its premiere performance in a school in 1689 and tells the story of Dido, the Queen of Carthage, who is abandoned by her Trojan lover, Aeneas. The opera contains some of the finest examples of dramatic Baroque music, from choruses of drunken sailors and haggard witches to Dido’s plaintive Lament.
