The annual Royal Hospital School Christmas concert is an event keenly anticipated each year. This year the programme begins with Benjamin Britten’s cantata, Saint Nicolas. It tells the story of the original ‘Santa Claus’, a fourth-century saint whose acts – revitalising three boys who had been pickled by an unscrupulous landlord being among the more dramatic – led to his canonisation as patron saint of children and sailors. Britten’s lively setting is distinctly operatic, full of incident and colour, with the story brought home with some recognisable audience hymns. The part of Nicolas (sung by Daniel Joy, www. danieljoy.com) is one of Britten’s great heroic tenor roles. The second half will consist of many classic festive favourites with numerous sing-along carols and a delightful array of joyful works.
All this taking place in the magnificent candlelit surroundings of the Royal Hospital School chapel, making this a not to be missed event – perfect for all!
