Prepare for the ‘wow factor’ as more than 200 singers from the RHS Chapel Choir, the Holbrook Choral Society and Ipswich Choral Society raise the roof in a performance of Verdi’s Messa da Requiem. The work is sometimes described as ‘opera without the costumes’ and is certainly one of the most theatrical settings ever of these words.
It’s a work of fantastic contrasts, with a truly terrifying musical description of the Day of Judgement in the famous Dies Irae, joyously dancing angels in the Sanctus, and the whispered prayers of sinners on earth in the Agnus Dei.
Four superb soloists drawn from the world of opera will heighten the musical drama, and the Reade Orchestra will be augmented by off-stage trumpets and thunderous percussion.
